Can Non-Wifi Baby Monitors Be Hacked?

Can Non-Wifi Baby Monitors Be Hacked?You have probably heard many cases of baby monitors being hacked.

Personally, the scariest I’ve ever come across was a case where a 3-year-old boy tells his parents that he’s scared and can hear someone talking to him, after which they hear a man taunting him.

Also creepy enough was an incident where a man was screaming at a 10-year-old girl, telling her to wake up. after hearing this, her parents also notice the camera following them around the room.

These are just a few incidences and I’m pretty sure you’ve come across many more of them.

Having heard such chilling news, you’d want to ensure that the baby monitor you want to buy is highly secure to minimize chances of hackers getting access to it.

And this leads us to our Million-dollar question:

Can a non-wifi baby monitor get hacked?

First, allow me to state that I’ve NEVER come across a news headline screaming: “Non-wifi baby monitor hacked!”

To answer our main question, let me take you back a little bit…we mentioned earlier these baby monitors use a wireless transmission technology known as FHSS (Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum).

What makes this technology special is that it’s not static—meaning it hops rapidly among varying frequency channels within a scope of 2400 MHz to 2483 MHz.

Theoretically, FHSS is unhackable!

And that’s because…

Hackers will have a really HARD time figuring out how the frequency hops (since developers write their own protocol privately). It’ll also be pretty hard for the intruders to capture a signal from the right frequency at the right timing.

BUT… don’t celebrate yet!

The non-wifi model might not be 100% unhackable baby monitor;

Research has uncovered that a dedicated hacker might still be able to find and follow your baby monitor signal as it hops across channels. However, this would happen if the attacker is physically close to you (think nearby apartments) and has the right listening equipment. (Source)

All in all, the non-wifi baby monitors are the safest, most secure models compared to other baby monitors on the market today. As long as you find a quality and reliable product, you can rest assured that it’ll meet all your baby monitoring needs while keeping your digital privacy locked!
